Evening Update - 2/2/2021
Angels suspend Mickey Callaway, the Reds pick up a reliever, Marwin Gonzalez has several suitors, & more.
Good evening.
It’s February 2nd, 2021, and here’s everything that happened in baseball from 9:00 AM EST to 5:00 PM EST.
What You Missed While Working
Following the report this morning by The Athletic, the Angels have suspended pitching coach Mickey Callaway.

Though Callaway denies any wrongdoing, texts and photos from The Athletic story seem to prove otherwise.
Everything Else
LH reliever Sean Doolittle has agreed to a deal with the Reds, reports Jon Morosi. The two-time All-Star struggled in 2020, posting a 5.87 ERA in 11 appearances.
The Red Sox are among several teams interested in utilityman Marwin Gonzalez. Mark Feinsand says his market is “predictably heating up.” Count the Phillies in that group as well.
The Padres have announced that Erik Greupner has been elevated to CEO and A.J. Preller named President of Baseball Operations and GM. Preller has signed an extension through 2026.
Barry Jackson and Craig Mish report the Marlins are showing interest in LH reliever Chase Shreve. The two also relay that Miami has told 2020 closer Brandon Kinzler that they want him back, but they have yet to make an offer.
In the aftermath of the Nolan Arenado deal, Brewers GM David Stearns says he expects SS Trevor Story to begin the season with the team. He also says that OF Ryan Braun has made no decision on retirement. Braun is 37 years old.
Rick Hummel says it seems that Yadier Molina will be back with the Cardinals and there is little interest in having Kolten Wong return.
The Rays have hired Denard Span as a special assistant of baseball operations. Span spent parts of his final season in the majors in 2018 with Tampa Bay.
The Phillies signed RHPs Hector Rodon and David Paulino to minor league contracts. Jon Heyman reports Rodon will make $1.5 million if he makes the major league club and has an additional $1 million in incentives.
The Brewers sign RHP Nathan Patterson to a minor league deal.
RHP Spencer Patton has signed a minor league deal with a spring training invite with the Rangers, John Blake reports.
Melissa Lockhard reports the A’s added veteran reliever Deolis Guerra and catching prospect Kyle McCann to their non-roster invite list and officially announced a minor league deal with Carlos Pérez.
The Pirates annouced several non-roster invites to big league camp here.
The Marlins purchased the contract of 1B Chris Chinea from the Milwaukee Milkmen of the American Association.
With Sean Doolittle signing with the Reds, Jon Becker points out that now only four teams are yet to sign a fully guaranteed free agent this offseason: A’s, Pirates, Diamondbacks, and Rockies.
