Morning Update 01/15/2021
More relievers come off the board, an interesting idea for the DH, & more.
Good morning.
It’s January 15th, and here’s everything that happened in the world of baseball from 5 PM EST yesterday to 9 AM EST today.
The Most Important Thing
After an earlier report had RP Archie Bradley closing in on a deal with a mystery team, Ben Nicholson-Smith broke the news that the mystery team was the Phillies.
Bradley spent his first five seasons and part of a sixth with the Diamondbacks, before being traded to Cincinnati in late August. He had a 2.95 ERA last season, and has had an ERA+ over 100 each of the last four years, posting a ridiculous 273 ERA+ in 2017.
Everything Else
RHP Michael Givens and the Colorado Rockies agreed to a one year, $4.05 million contract to avoid arbitration.
LHP Alex Wood and the Giants have agreed to a one year, $3 million deal. Wood, an all-star in 2017, pitched 12.2 innings for the Dodgers last season with a 6.39 ERA.
Robert Murray reports the Dodgers agree to a one year, $975,000 deal with RP Dylan Floro to avoid arbitration.
RP Danny Hultzen is retiring from baseball and taking a pitching development job with the Cubs front office, per Barry Svrluga. Drafted #2 overall in 2011 by the Mariners, Hultzen had injury issues throughout his career. He managed just six major-league appearances, all coming in 2019 with the Cubs.
The Phillies are considering signing SS Freddy Galvis to be their shortstop, per Scott Lauber. Galvis spent six seasons with the Phillies from 2012-2017, and has bounced around from San Diego to Toronto to Cincinnati since. Marcus Semien is also an option for Philly.
The Mets are still “in” on RP Brad Hand, according to Andy Martino.
Tim Tebow says he’s sticking with the Mets and not taking a job on Urban Meyer’s staff in Jacksonville.
Columns With Your Coffee
Jonathan Mayo ranks his all-prospect pitching rotations by division.
Mike Oz on Theo Epstein’s new job with MLB’s commissioners office.
Mike Puma says the Mets’ Trevor May is dreaming of the team adding George Springer - and maybe more.

Foul Tips
Jayson Stark on a very interesting idea on how to use the DH - once the starting pitcher leaves the game, so does the DH. If we’re going to use the DH, this isn’t a bad option.
God bless and good day!
